An Alaska Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Honolulu (HNL) on Friday after a warning indicator light turned on and the pilots idled the engine.Alaska Flight 145 from Seattle (SEA) to Honolulu (HNL) was just past the halfway point of its route when the Boeing 737-800 aircraft’s oil filter bypass light came on. The pilots idled the engine, according to protocol, and continued on to Honolulu.“The captain came on the overhead speaker and just said that they were having overheating of one of the engines so they needed to idle a little bit to try to let it cool off,” passenger Carrie Mingle told KHON 2 News in Seattle. “But that we’re going to have to make a quicker landing than usual. And we were going to have a fire crew ready when we landed just in case. That’s about all he said and then he got off quickly.“The other engine and systems on the aircraft were operating normally. By all accounts, the flight’s eight crew members stayed calm and were effective during the incident.“The pilot very coolly said what had happened, and he kept us posted,” passenger Eaneanth Rao told KHON 2. “He said he alerted the fire rescue and we had no problem at all. Excellent landing.“The flight was initially going to divert to Maui, but it was flying safely, so it continued on to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) where it safely executed an emergency landing just before 10:00pm local time. “We landed very safely thanks to the pilot.
