Each month, airlines around the world launch and announce dozens of new flight routes and service changes — and today, TPG Points & Miles Editor Sarah Silbert shares just a few of the latest flights that will take to the skies this month or in the near future. Image courtesy of Shutterstock.San Francisco (SFO) - Hangzhou (HGH) on United (launched July 13)Details — Earlier this month, United began thrice-weekly nonstop flights between San Francisco and Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan International Airport aboard its 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This brings the number of mainland China cities serviced by the airline to five. Through August 5, the carrier is operating three weekly flights with its Dreamliner 787-8, and it will then increase the frequency to four times a week. Ethiopian offers service in each direction on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, with a Friday flights starting in August. Flights in each direction include a stop in Lomé, Togo. All routes operate twice a week with a connection in Reykjavik. Flights from the West Coast to Iceland operate on the carrier’s single-class A330 aircraft, while those from the East Coast and Reykjavik to Edinburgh use the A321. Image courtesy of Shutterstock.Southwest to Begin Nonstop Service Between Newark and Puerto RicoDetails — We’re starting to see some positive effects of the FAA’s decision to ease slot restrictions at Newark Airport. Exhibit A? Southwest recently announced that it will launch nonstop flights each Saturday between EWR and San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) starting December 17, 2016. Newark has long been dominated by United flights, and this news could mean more low-cost carriers will begin offering routes through the busy airport. The airline is adding four new flights to Newark, marking the first time Allegiant will serve the New York City area. The carrier also plans to add service between Ogdensburg, New York and two new cities and a handful of other new domestic routes.
