In its on-going campaign against rowdy tourists, the historic city has announced that it is considering a new nightly ban on public alcohol consumption after 7:00pm. And that doesn’t just mean no more open containers on the city streets, but liquor concealed in shopping bags as well.The law is not targeted toward those making a run to the supermarket for a bottle of wine, however....

An Air Astana Airbus A320-200 skidded off a runway Thursday morning at Astana International Airport (TSE) in Kazakhstan.Two dramatic videos posted on social media show Air Astana Flight 352 approaching the runway during strong wind gusts. Winds reportedly reached about 49 knots due to thunderstorms in the area near the airport.One of the videos, taken by a bystander outside the plane, shows the aircraft approaching TSE’s runway 22 at an extreme angle due to heavy crosswind....

Update 11:11am: Just after we published, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that all 280 airports with nonstop flights to the US are now in compliance of the new security regulations:This week, we found out the great news that the last airport — Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (RUH) — was cleared from the large carry-on electronics ban. This marks the first time in nearly four months that travelers departing from Middle Eastern and African airports on flights to the US aren’t forced to check electronics such as laptops, cameras, tablets, e-readers, portable DVD players and even noise-canceling headphones....

United made headlines around the world in April when a passenger was forcibly removed from a flight between Chicago (ORD) to Louisville (SDF). Initial reports indicated that the flight was oversold, but as it turns out, it wasn’t. Instead, United needed to fly crew members to SDF, resulting in passengers needing to be bumped from the flight. Now, after the carrier faced significant backlash for its handling of the incident and stirring up the conversation on overselling as a whole, United announced it’s introducing a new way it’s going to manage oversold flights....

Every week, I get a litany of “last minute” weekend getaway fare emails. Usually these discounted fares are routes with excess inventory so the airlines discount the last minute fares in order to generate some revenue for otherwise unsold seats.I thought to myself the other day “Why aren’t there last minute AWARD ticket emails?”. And from that point on, the concept of Points Guy Hump Day Getaways was created. The number of suspected cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo grew to 42, shortly after healthcare officials confirmed the new outbreak’s first two infections last week.The outbreak was confirmed in the town of Bikoro by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Congo’s Health Ministry.At least 19 people have already died of suspected Ebola infections in Bikoro in the past five weeks the WHO said Monday, according to Bloomberg....

This is a guest post from my dad, Grandpa Points. For some, it’s enough to divert a flight.On Saturday, Swiss flight LX1327 was diverted due to a passenger becoming aggressive after she was denied champagne onboard, the Associated Press reported.The flight, traveling from Moscow’s Domodedovo airport (DME) to Zurich (ZRH), was diverted to Germany’s Stuttgart airport (STR) after a 44-year-old business class passenger became agitated enough for the crew members to make an emergency stop with less than an hour of flight time left....

As mentioned last week, I am currently working with Rick, The Frugal Travel Guy, to organize this year’s frequent flyer Seminars, which will take place in Chicago from October 12-14. You can now book rooms at the host hotel, the Holiday Inn Elk Grove Village. Registration for the actual seminar isn’t yet open because we are working out some final details, but that should be available soon and last year registration was open pretty much until a week to the event, so if you want to attend it shouldn’t be an issue....

Traveling to Russia can be an extremely frustrating affair, thanks to a grueling visa application process the US Embassy and Consulate has called a “restrictive and complicated [regime].”But this summer, Russia is waiving its visa requirements for foreigners holding tickets to a FIFA World Cup soccer match. Only 27 countries currently enjoy regular visa-free travel to Russia, and that list includes South Ossetia, Moldova and Abkhazia.According to the embassy of the Russian Federation, foreigners can travel throughout Russia from June 4 until July 25 without a Russian visa....

More than four years after Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 went missing, the second official search for the aircraft has ended. On Tuesday, Ocean Infinity, the private company that led the most recent search efforts called off the hunt for MH370.For the past 90 days, Ocean Infinity had used a deep-sea vessel to scour the Indian Ocean’s floor — searching for any signs of the Malaysian 777-200. The aircraft went missing in March 2014 after it took off from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) en route to Beijing (PEK), carrying 239 people on board....
