On Thursday afternoon, news broke that a Xiamen Airlines Boeing 737-800 veered off a runway in Manila, resulting in a lost engine. See privacy policy.During an investor presentation in November (caution: PDF link), United shared plans to pull its remaining 747-400s from service by the third quarter of 2018. That gave jumbo diehards plenty of time to book a few more flights on UA’s Queen of the Skies, but unfortunately we’ve now confirmed that the aircraft’s retirement has been accelerated — all 20 747s will be pulled from service by the end of this year....

Back in December, the US Airways Premier World MasterCard from Barclaycard offered targeted cardholders referral bonuses of between 5,000-10,000 miles for each person they referred to sign up for the card who applied successfully. The promotion period ended January 18, and it looks like the miles have just started posting to cardholders’ accounts. So if you referred folks for the card, log into your Dividend Miles account on US Airways’ site and check if your miles have posted yet....

British Airways is running a 25% bonus when you purchase Avios points until February 29, 2012. The maximum amount of points you can purchase per account every year is 24,000 and with this promotion you can get 24,000 + 25% bonus for a total of $685, or 2.3 cents per mile.So is this a good deal?In general, I don’t think so. However, the new Avios program is great for short and mid-haul travel and if you fly any expensive routes, especially on partners like American Airlines or LAN, this could make sense....

Buying airline tickets for one is one thing. Buying airline tickets for 2, 3, 4, or 5 people is on a whole other playing field. If you are using miles it can be much harder to find that many award tickets for a family, and if you are using cash you can hit four figures of airfare costs very, very quickly, even on moderately priced domestic trips.Of course, you didn’t need me to tell you that, but since that is our current reality as a family of four, it is math we are now working with on a regular basis....
