A few weeks ago, we covered Kauai as our Destination of the Week, which got me thinking about a trip to Hawaii. Since I spent much of last week in Los Angeles, I ended up booking a last minute trip on American Airlines from LAX to Lihue.I also booked a room at the Grand Hyatt for $393 a night, but using my Diamond Gold Passport suite upgrade certificates, I was able to confirm an upgrade to a 1,300-square foot Garden View Suite ,which was going for $693 a night at the time of booking....

As a benefit of earning elite status, World of Hyatt issues upgrade certificates to frequent guests. Top-tier Globalist members earn four confirmed suite upgrades, called Complimentary Suite Upgrade Awards, and Explorists earn four Club Lounge access certificates once they reach that elite level. For both types of awards, each certificate will cover a stay of up to seven nights.One aspect of the upgrade program has irked some members, however. In the past, certificates have been valid for one year from the date they’re issued — they expire 365 days after issuance, rather than at the end of the elite year....

So a 40,000 point hotel night would only be 24,000 if the property ran a Point Stretcher award....

Norwegian Air seems to be expanding its US route network at an impressive rate. Last year, the airline took the travel world by storm by announcing that it was planning to offer $69 one-way fares from the US to Europe. Then, the carrier added inexpensive nonstop service from the Northeast to the Caribbean, as well as three nonstop flights from the US to Paris. And then, just a couple weeks ago, Norwegian launched nonstop flights from Oakland (OAK) to London (LGW) — the first nonstop flight from Oakland to the UK....

Boeing’s newest and longest Dreamliner, the 787-10, is a step closer to welcoming its first passengers. A brand new 787-10 destined for Singapore Airlines’ fleet just rolled out of the assembly line Tuesday morning in Charleston, South Carolina.While the first ever 787-10 rolled out back in February, that aircraft’s mission was to go through the rigorous tests that new aircraft must pass to become certified, which it is still undergoing. It will eventually be retrofitted for customers and end up in regular passenger service....

How much chocolate is too much chocolate? Well, if anyone out there knows, it might just be the guests who’ve booked their stay at Booking.com’s new “Chocolate Cottage.”The cottage is made almost entirely of chocolate. The walls, the décor and the furniture (though, thankfully not the bed) were all constructed and designed by master chocolatier Jean-Luc Decluzeau.“I never thought I’d have the opportunity to build a life-size chocolate cottage for travelers to sleep in!...

In September, the “wacky airline video” trend claimed yet another victim when American Airlines debuted a perfectly choreographed in-flight safety video (which you can see below) to accompany the carrier’s spiffy new Cole Haan-designed uniforms, donned by more than 70,000 airline employees.As with the uniforms, reviews of the new safety video were also mixed. While the action — which recreates the safety check process on a soundstage — is a lot tamer than other instructional videos out there, some experts believe that this tendency toward silliness in presenting safety information may be causing passengers to miss the safety part altogether....

United CEO Oscar Munoz saw his 2017 pay nearly halved that of the year before, following a number of public relation disasters the airline faced throughout the year.In 2017, Munoz took home a total of $9.56 million. While it may seem like a lot, the total is nearly half of the amount of cash Munoz received in 2016, United said in a filing on Monday. In a letter to employees, Munoz detailed that he deferred the bonus from United’s compensation committee....

Yesterday Delta revealed mileage earnings for flights on its new joint-venture partner, Korean Air. Now we have even more good news about the integration of the two carriers.Delta announced that you will be able to use Global Upgrade Certificates on Korean. This is similar to how you can use Global Upgrades and even SkyMiles to bump yourself up on Delta’s other joint venture partner Virgin Atlantic. Global Upgrade Certificates can also be redeemed on select Air France, KLM and Aeromexico flights....
