The timing is ideal as Airbnb is launching experiences in Philadelphia starting today, Monday, February 12. The news comes after the city experienced a surge in tourists after the Eagles’ big win, and Airbnb reports that travelers visiting the city increased by 80% between February 7 and 8 compared to the week prior....

So, we were happy to see Alaska MileagePlan add Japan Airlines awards last December, and even happier to see that the rates were reasonable (the same can’t be said for Alaska’s revised rates for Emirates awards, however)....
Thursday’s “bomb cyclone” left air travel throughout much of the US Northeast at a standstill. In total, airlines canceled more than 4,300 flights on Thursday, with delays and cancellations carrying over into Friday. With the cancellations also came a complete shutdown of New York JFK among other airports, which snarled traffic even more: Some already-airborne aircraft that were presumably trying to beat out the storm were left with having to find a different airport to land....

Debris from ‘Tiangong-1’, China’s now defunct space station, could come crashing into Earth as early as Friday, Chinese authorities who are monitoring the situation say. Most of the station, however, will likely burn up in the atmosphere before it hits Earth, but it’s possible that some debris could survive and strike Earth’s surface. This past weekend I went to Dublin (and had a fantastic time) and since I snagged a super-cheap $379 total roundtrip airfare, I knew I’d be stuck in coach since Delta has a super-annoying (read: expensive) international upgrade policy. For anyone unaware, you need to book full fare (Y, B, M class) economy fares, which are often around the same price as discounted business class, and then use 25,000 miles each way to upgrade....
Details are scarce, but it looks like Delta has engaged Blackstone to advise it on a potential American Airlines acquisition. Separately, private equity firm TPG Capital (no, not related with this blog :-)) has also started to look into a potential acquisition.Blackstone was the firm that helped turn Delta around their bankruptcy and TPG did the same for United. I think the biggest challenge would be for Delta getting regulatory approval since Delta and American are the #2 and #3 largest US airlines and they have a decent amount of route overlap, especially in NYC, and Delta has been growing a mini-hub in Miami....

Ryanair, the low-cost carrier that has been plagued with pilots’ strikes across Europe this summer, has finally settled the work conditions dispute in one country: Italy.The agreement, announced on Tuesday, marks the first time the Dublin-based airline has settled with any labor union in its 30-year history. The details of the collective labor agreement signed with the Italian Airline Pilots Association were not immediately disclosed. Italy accounts for 20% of Ryanair’s fleet and pilots....
